The John Tallis Recital with Tim Young

Laurence and Tim Young team up once more to present a program of classic two piano repertoire, all of which are now more commonly heard in orchestral form. The first half surveys Holst's epic tone poems The Planets and the second half explores the rhythmic dance and movement of Stravinsky and Ravel. The program will be performed on two unique Stuart and Sons pianos and celebrates the birthday of one of Beleura's founders; the composer and pianist John Tallis.

Join Timothy Young, Laurence Matheson and pianists from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) as they perform in a program that includes Carl Vine’s Sonata for Four Hands.

This work for Four Hands is played in five sections, without a break. Carl Vine says “using those two extra hands which, by playing on the same instrument, have a distinct advantage over their 'duo' brethren”. It is 'pure' music with no specific accompanying narrative or poetic allusion.

SSO: Carnival of the (Australian) Animals

Australia is notorious for its fearsome fauna – any visitor can tell you about our biting, stinging animals! So an Australian like Matthew Hindson is probably best qualified to compose a modern "Carnival of the Animals" that's all about the nasty ones.

Big and hairy, small and scary, and finishing with the most dangerous creatures of all – humans! Then TV personality Richard Morecroft narrates the music that started it all – Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals – with new words by Bradley Trevor Greive (The Blue Day Book). From the long-eared bilby to the koala and the blobfish, Greive finds Aussie animals to match Saint-Saëns' original musical caricatures.

SSO: Saint-Saens in the Morning

Saint-Saëns is the featured composer for the morning, with what's probably his most famous music heard alongside a rarely heard gem.

The literary title La Muse et la Poète was adopted after the event, but it's easy to agree with the publisher who heard the violin (our Muse) offering soothing responses to the pensive complaints of the cello (the Poet). This is virtuoso music but the style is rhapsodic and lyrical – a delightful flight of fancy. Then well-loved TV personality Richard Morecroft narrates Carnival of the Animals with words by Tasmanian conservationist Bradley Trevor Greive (The Blue Day Book). It's a fresh take on a timeless classic, matching quirky Australian animals to Saint-Saëns' original vignettes.

Celebrity, visionary, muse: Vaslav Nijinsky changed dance forever with his explosive leap and his shockingly sensual choreography, before a dark descent into madness ended his career.

John Neumeier, one of the greatest living choreographers of the story ballet and director of the acclaimed Hamburg Ballet, charts Nijinsky’s rise and fall through the vivid memories unfolding in the dancer’s mind during his last performance in a Swiss hotel. He recalls his troubled family, his ill-starred romances and the transcendent performances that brought him fame.

The ballet is a tour de force for the whole company, but especially the male dancers, who are given the opportunity to evoke Nijinsky’s distinctive style amid sets and costumes inspired by the exotic glamour of the Ballets Russes.

Both a moving tribute and a spectacular piece of theatre, Nijinsky will transport you inside the mind of a genius – and to extremes of anguish and ecstasy.

Orchestra Victoria: Mostly Mozart

Join this Grand Tour through Europe with three of the greatest composers. Beethoven’s gruff and dramatic overture to Goethe’s Egmont, is a concentrated expression of the Dutch hero’s triumph sacrifice in the name of liberty and freedom from the Spanish. Mozart’s youthful Piano Concerto No.12, K.414 is a miracle of the Austrian genius’ maturity beyond his years. Although premiered in London in 1833, Mendelssohn’s Italian symphony was first conceived during a tour the young composer took through the major capitals cities of Italy. He wrote to his sister that ‘it will be the happiest piece I have ever written, especially the last movement’ and certainly a feeling of joyous energy dominates the symphony, which throbs with Italian dance rhythms, from the Roman saltarello to the frenzied Neapolitan tarantella.
